Calcium carbonate has been one of the most commonly used sources of calcium in the diet of dogs and cats for decades. It is a reliable way of meeting the daily calcium requirements of our four-legged friends.
Calcium is an essential mineral that plays a central role in building and maintaining strong bones and healthy teeth. It is also important for muscle contraction, the transmission of stimuli in the nervous system and blood clotting. An adequate supply is therefore essential for numerous bodily functions.
The correct ratio of calcium to phosphorus is particularly important, as the two minerals interact closely. An unbalanced ratio - whether too much or too little - can lead to long-term health problems. A calcium-phosphorus ratio of between 1:1 and 2:1 is recommended for a balanced diet.
A major advantage of calcium carbonate compared to other calcium sources is its particularly high calcium content of almost 40 %. This means that a low daily dosage is sufficient, which makes it very easy to use - ideal for daily supplementation of BARF, home-cooked rations or pure meat doses.
