Omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid, DHA, EPA) are polyunsaturated fatty acids and are found in plant oils (alpha-linolenic acid, e.g., in flaxseed oil) and animal oils (EPA and DHA, primarily in fish or algae oil).
These are essential for the general health of the animal, as they are important for cell function, the nervous system, and the immune system, among other things.
Due to their structure, DHA and EPA also play an important role in dogs and cats with regard to diseases, as they have anti-inflammatory properties that can be used therapeutically. EPA and, above all, DHA have a longer chain of C atoms (20 and 22 C atoms, respectively) and are therefore more potent for this indication than alpha-linolenic acid (18 C atoms).
Conditions for which omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) should be used as a targeted supportive measure:
- Atopy (environmental allergy) and skin diseases
- Chronic intestinal inflammation and IBD
- Renal insufficiency
- Heart diseases
- Epilepsy
- Tumor diseases
- Joint diseases such as arthritis/arthrosis
- Overweight
